2017 marked 8 successful years of the Community Awards and partnership with our headline sponsors Pictons. The Awards were a great success with a cheque presentation of £25,000 to our charity partner, Luton Foodbank. In addition to this we saw a gesture of goodwill to one of our award winners, Lillie Jackson, who was presented with £1,000 in addition to her award to support her wish to pursue further education. In 2017 we saw an introduction of new award categories and a sell out audience within weeks of tickets being advertised.
Our Charity Partner – Luton Foodbank
Charities from across Luton & Bedfordshire were invited to apply for a cash boost from our Community Awards. Our chosen charity partner for 2017 was Luton Foodbank, who welcomed the boost at a time when food-bank usage was and still is at an all-time high.
The dependency of local families upon food-banks have spiked over the past few years and many people would go hungry if food banks were not available to them. Luton Foodbank provided 7000 emergency food parcels in 2016 alone to individuals and families. On average, 125 food parcels are provided on a weekly basis to the most needy and vulnerable.
In 2017 the Community Awards pledged to support Luton Foodbank to raise £15,000 in order to purchase a delivery van. With the help of local businesses, organisations and of course the community we were able to purchase a delivery van in order to support the most needy and vulnerable families and individuals in Luton, as well as cover the running costs for the year. In total we raised £25,000, £10,000 more than we initially set out to fundraise.
